PRAYER AND WORSHIP

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Today is Peace Sunday – the message from Pope Francis is “education, work and dialogue between generations and tools for building lasting peace”.

Putting Peace into Action

  1. Peace; based on justice, where human rights are respected, basic needs are met and people feel safe in their communities

  2. Reconciliation; when people try to mend relationships, between individuals or whole countries

  3. Non-violence; a way of living with choices that offer alternatives to violence and war

On Wednesday, we celebrate the feast day of a ‘local’ saint – St Wulstan. He was a Benedictine monk who re-founded the monastery at Westbury on Trym. He was a great preacher and became Bishop of Worcester in 1062. St Wulstan was instrumental in abolishing the slave trade from Bristol to Viking Ireland. We have a stained glass window dedicated to St Wulstan in our church.

Tomorrow, Monday, we remember St Anthony of Egypt who was born in the year 251. He was so moved by the Gospel message “go sell what you have and give to the poor” that he did just that. He lived as a hermit but drew many people to himself for spiritual healing and guidance.

FACE COVERINGS

Following the government’s announcement on tighter restrictions due to the new Omicron variant, it is once more mandatory to wear a face covering in a place of worship. Hand sanitiser is expected to be used and is readily available in the narthex.

FATHER HENRY and POLISH MASS

We are happy to have Father Henry with us until 24th January. There will be a Polish Mass next Sunday 23rd January at 12 noon.

FATHER LOUIS BEASLEY-SUFFOLK – MASS OF THANKSGIVING

St Patrick’s Parish will remember in prayer the repose of the soul of Father Louis Beasley-Suffolk at a memorial Mass to be arranged shortly. Father Louis was buried from his parish in Wincanton on Thursday 13th January and this Mass will be our opportunity in the parish, to express our appreciation for the many years of service to us as a parishioner and his many years of service to the diocese as a priest.  We extend our sympathies to all of Father Louis’ family, his children Rebecca, Katrina, Stephanie, Louis, Daniel, Damian, Edmond and all his grandchildren. May he Rest in Peace.

REST IN PEACE

Several parishioners have lost loved ones in the past two weeks.

  1. Please pray for Chummar Chelangara who died last week. The family returned to India for their father’s/grandfather’s funeral.

  2. Please pray for Rani Sebastian’s father, Paily KP.

  3. Please pray for Mary Dineen’s brother, Paddy Dineen, who died recently.

We offer our prayers and sympathy to their families. May they Rest in Peace.

THE SYNOD TEAM

The SYNOD team met on the 12th of January, to discuss how we as a parish can contribute to the SYNOD, and would like to pose the following questions to parishioners.

1.       What do you enjoy about St Patrick’s Parish?

2.       What hinders or stops you from taking part in Parish activities?

3.       Do you feel part of the Parish community? And how do you feel part of the Parish community?

4.       What could be done to make people feel more involved or included in the Parish community?

A number of delegates will be available in the church and narthex, after each Sunday Mass for the next four weeks, with a display board with some interactive activities and post-it notes for parishioners to contribute their thoughts and ideas on these subjects.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM NYSA

Father Henry and the seven priests who live in Nysa have sent their Christmas Greetings and their letter is on the notice board. The priests thank St Patrick’s and The Grant Bradley Trust for the financial help given to them over the years.

LEGION OF MARY INVITATION:

The Legion of Mary Society wishes to invite members and parishioners to meet in the Shore Gallery after the “Friday Midday Mass” and hope the new time works well. This is an opportunity to come together in prayer; to experience the Spirit’s love in the gentleness of Mary. We intend to look at ways, in these times of worry and uncertainty, as to how we can share the love of God with those in need. For further details please contact John Jordan 07771 902337.
