BAPTISM OF THE LORD

Today is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord which signifies the end of the Christmas season. We commemorate the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan by his cousin, St John the Baptist, which marks the beginning of the ministry of Jesus and confirms he is the Son of God. “At Christ’s Baptism, the heavens were opened; at our Baptism, heaven was opened to us”. In St Patrick’s, the mosaic to the left of the altar is a picture of the Baptism and in the narthex we have the big Tryptych painting depicting this scene.

Today is also the feast day of St Adrian. Born in Africa in the eighth century, he spent most of life teaching in Canterbury which became one of the most important centres of learning, producing many future Bishops and Archbishops.

PRAYER AND WORSHIP

FACE COVERINGS

Following the government’s announcement on tighter restrictions due to the new Omicron variant, it is once more mandatory to wear a face covering in a place of worship. Hand sanitiser is expected to be used and is readily available in the narthex.

FATHER HENRY and POLISH MASS

We are happy to have Father Henry with us until 24th January. There will be a Polish Mass today at 12 noon.

FATHER LOUIS BEASLEY-SUFFOLK – REST IN PEACE

Father Louis Beasley-Suffolk’s funeral will take place on Thursday 13th January at 12 noon at his parish church, the Church of St Luke & St Teresa, South Street, Wincanton BA9 9DH. His body will be received into the church the afternoon before by Canon Gregory at 4pm during a memorial Mass.

Father Louis was a parishioner of St Patrick’s and, after the death of his wife Mary, he entered Seminary in Rome and was ordained a priest in our church of St Patrick. Father Louis was parish priest of Wincanton and Dean of Somerset. Many of Father Louis’ family worship at St Patrick’s Church and his son Daniel is a teacher in St Patrick’s School. We offer our prayers and sympathy to all his children: Louis, Daniel, Edmond, Katrina, Stephanie and Rebecca and his grandchildren. May he Rest in Peace.

This is the theme announced for World Peace Day.  Pope Francis is inviting us to think of the role of education and upbringing in building lasting peace, and creating solidarity and dialogue between generations as a way of building peace. This provides a golden opportunity for families, schools and groups to explore their role in peace making. LEGION OF MARY INVITATION:

The Legion of Mary Society wish to invite members and parishioners to meet in the Shore Gallery after the “Friday Midday Mass” and hope the new time works well. This is an opportunity to come together in prayer; to experience the Spirit’s love in the gentleness of Mary. We intend to look at ways, in these times of worry and uncertainty, as to how we can share the love of God with those in need. For further details please contact John Jordan 07771 902337.
