PRAYER AND WORSHIP

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

This week we remember three saintly women in the Catholic calendar. Australia’s first saint was St Mary McKillop (July 19th) who was born in 1842. She founded the Josephite Sisters who set up schools and orphanage for children of all religions including Aborigines. The Bishop in South Australia opposed her and eventually approval for her work came from Pope Leo XIII.

St Mary Magdalene is one of the most honoured women in the Bible and we remember her on Friday, 22nd July. She stood by the cross of Jesus with Mary, his mother, and was a witness to the Resurrection.

St Bridget of Sweden had eight children the second of whom was St Catherine of Sweden. She founded an order called the Bridgetines for men and women. In 1999, St Bridget, St Catherine of Siena and St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross were named co-patronesses of Europe.

SAINT BERNADETTE RELIC TOUR 2022

In September and October this year, the relics of St. Bernadette will journey on pilgrimage through England, Scotland and Wales. St. Bernadette’s relics will be visiting Clifton Cathedral on Saturday 10th September 2022 for one day. This will be a unique opportunity to experience the special gifts and charisms of Lourdes. Please join us for this special experience, when pilgrims will be able to join us for Mass with anointing of the sick, Torchlight procession, Rosary, and the opportunity to venerate these relics of “The Saint of Lourdes”. Exact details will be available soon.

REST IN PEACE

Please pray for Bill Gage who died recently. Bill was a very familiar presence at St Patrick’s, taking the collection up at the 10am Mass most weeks. We offer our prayers and sympathy to his wife, Marie, and all his family.  Bill’s Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday 9th August at 11am followed by burial in South Bristol Cemetery. May he rest in Peace.

EDUCATION AND FORMATION

CLIFTON DIOCESE TRUSTEES

The Diocese is currently looking for individuals to join the Board of the Trustees to enhance the skills of the Board in Specific areas as a result of current vacancies.  Suitable applicants should have in depth knowledge and experience of either corporate law, property law, or a HR environment. In order to support the full activities of the Board, experience in charity or corporate governance would also be beneficial.  The commitment is to one 3 hour meeting per month on a Wednesday from 9.30am in Bristol along with other on at least one sub-committee, and preparation for meetings.  It is usual for a Trustee to give somewhere in the region of 6 hours per month plus travelling time.  If you would like to be considered for a position, please send your details to the Bishop’s Private Secretary, St Ambrose, North Rd, Leigh Woods, Bristol BS8 3PW by 5th August.

SEEDS OF FAITH – TAUNTON

The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch but in communion, in intimacy, with Jesus Christ: only He can lead us to the love of the Father in the Spirit and make us share in the life of the Holy Trinity’ St. John Paul II.

The Department for Adult Education and Evangelisation is offering a faith formation course, “Seeds of Faith”, for experienced and inexperienced catechists, and anyone interested in learning more about our Catholic faith. The course consists of ten Saturday afternoon sessions. The sessions start at 3pm, finishing 5pm, with refreshments from 2.30pm. This is an in-person, live event, the first session starts on Saturday 18th June at St George’s, Billet Street, Taunton, TA1 3NN. There will be Mass at St George’s at 5.30pm each Saturday. The dates of the course are 18th, 25th June, 9th, 16th July, 3rd, 17th, 24th September and 8th, 15th, 22nd October. The course fee is £40 (or £5 per session). 7-9th OCTOBER 2022 YOUNG CATHOLIC ADULTS (YCA) WEEKEND – “THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS’ prayer and veneration of the Holy Relics”

During the weekend of the 7th -9th October 2022, Young Catholic Adults will be running a retreat at Douai Abbey with the Schola Gregoriana of Cambridge who will be holding Gregorian Chant workshops.  There will also be a Marian Procession, Rosaries, Sung Mass, Confession, talks (and socials). The talks are – Rachael Mackenzie from “Rachael’s Vineyard” will be telling her conversion story (Sat) and Fr Glaysher will be talking about the Communion of Saints, prayer and the veneration of the Holy Relics (Sun).

Prices start from £12 (come for the day) and £55 per person per night (residential). Book soon as places are limited.  Please note to guarantee your place Douai Abbey have requested that everyone books in 3 weeks before the start of the weekend (16th September)

St Patrick’s School is looking for new governors!       

What is a School governor? 

School governors help the school run effectively. Governors are unpaid volunteers.  They are involved in:

  • Ensuring the catholicity of the school and curriculum

  • Contributing to the strategic direction of the school

  • Overseeing financial performance of the school and ensuring money is well spent

  • Holding the leadership accountable

Currently, we have vacancies for:

  • Foundation Governors – these individuals must be practising Catholics and are appointed by the Bishop to serve a 4 year term

  • A Community Governor – these individuals do not need to have a connection to the school, religion, or the local authority. They are co-opted governors because, in the opinion of the governing board, they have the skills required to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school

We would particularly welcome individuals with experience in finance, auditing, human resources, or legal issues.  However, the primary qualifications are a passion for education, for our School and a willingness to get involved.

How much time does it take?

Around 1-2 hours a week.  Much of our interaction is online by email, video call and through an online Governor platform where we exchange documents and ideas.  However, we also encourage you to engage in class visits, walk-arounds or meeting with staff, as and when time permits (e.g. once a term).  

We have a ‘Full Governing Board’ meeting every two months.  Aside from that you would likely belong to two sub-committees, each of which meet once every 3 months or so.

Most of the existing governors work full-time and have caring commitments, so we understand the need to be flexible.  More hands would make lighter work for everyone.  See here for a list of the current governors: https://www.stpatricksbristol.org.uk/School-Governors/ 

There is an application form to complete and we also run informal ‘interviews’ to have a chat about the role.

Please do consider this request.  We understand it may seem daunting, but being a governor is a wonderful way to serve the school and community.  We are lucky to have a very supportive and expert group of governors and school staff and we would very much welcome your help in continuing our work.  Do get in touch with me for a chat if you want further information.

ST PATRICK’S PRIMARY SCHOOL SATS RESULTS

Michele Marshall, Head Teacher, writes: I would like to thank the Grant Bradley Trust for the generous donation to the school this academic year to support pupil learning following COVID. We have been able to employ a tutor for the year and this has supported all Key Stage 2 classes and Key Stage 1 in the summer term.

I am delighted to say that the children have attained excellent results in Year 6  which are well above national results. Thank you for your continued support of the children and the school.

ST PATRICK’S SCHOOL

LEAVERS MASS – Today, 17th July, we celebrate Year 6 Leavers’ Mass.  We wish all the young people in Year 6, who will be leaving St Patrick’s on Friday 22nd July to continue their education in various senior schools around the city, every success for the future.

Sunday 17th – Leavers’ Mass 10am in the church.

Tuesday 19th – Year 6 Swimming.

Wednesday 20th –  Guitar concert for parents at 9.15am.

Year 6 Leavers play at 7pm in school.

Thursday 21st – School finishes for summer holidays at 2pm.

Thursday September 1st – School reopens for staff and pupils.

We wish the staff and pupils a happy and restful summer and look forward to seeing them in September.

SAYING GOODBYE

Canon Gregory writes:

Mrs Jo Deasey has been part of our school staff in St Patrick’s for nineteen years and has been a class teacher, Deputy Head and more recently a part-time teacher. Her contribution has been immense and as she formally concludes her working life as a teacher this week we thank her for all her years of service. Teaching as a vocation and not simply as a career is an attitude expressed by the staff in St Patrick’s and Jo Deasey is a brilliant example of putting the pupil, school and colleagues before herself. We wish Jo every blessing for the future and a wonderful retirement.

Are you a  10-14 year old who would like to get creative with computers and electronics? Are you looking for something to do in the Summer Holidays? Then Club Digimakers is for you!

Digimakers is a series of FREE, hands-on workshops for young people.  Join us for an introduction to making in the digital world, from hacking hardware to programming software, we can show you more ways to have fun with technology.

Every Wednesday throughout the summer holidays, we will deliver the same workshop form 10.00-12.00 and 13.00- 15.00.

Each week there will be a different theme:

CLIFTON SYNODAL REPORT

Canon Gregory and members of the Synod team, along with Michelle Marshall, representing St Patrick’s school,  attended the presentation service in Clifton Cathedral of the Synodal report in June. It summarises the process very well and is a very interesting read. Confirmation photographs are now being ordered through the parish office. They are A4 size and cost £15 each.  There are two photographs, one being confirmed, the other receiving the certificate.  If you would like to order one or both please order and pay through the parish office.

QUIZ NIGHT

Bristol Irish Society is organising a Quiz in The Lock Up, Church Road on Wednesday 27th July starting at 7.30 pm. Cost £12 per teams of 4 or 5.  Everyone welcome.

CAFE ASSISI OFFER

Cafe Assisi would like to offer a special dinner deal for our parishioners. Anyone booking a dinner at the cafe for a minimum of 4 people will get a complimentary bottle of house wine. This offer is valid for dinner on a full meal basis. Parishioners must specify the deal when booking.

BAPTISMS

(1) Baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of each month at 11.30am. Parents must attend the two Talks A and B before their child(ren) can be baptised.  

(2) Next Sunday 24th July,  Dylan Gaiger and Adele Wesolowska will be baptised.  We congratulate their parents and godparents and welcome them into the family of God.

300 CLUB WINNERS JUNE 2022

The Summer “BIG DRAW” will take place today after the 10 am Mass. All 300 Club members must be paid up to date in order to be eligible to take part in the draw.

MISSION BY THE LEGION OF MARY

We are very grateful to Mr John Jordan who leads our parish Legion of Mary group each Friday for organising a mission in St Patrick from 20-27 August. A team of 10 volunteer lay missionaries from all over England, Scotland and Ireland, five male/five female, are giving up their time to do this missionary work in our parish. The Team will spend the week visiting door to door all the people who live in our parish encouraging the lapsed to return to the practice of their faith and informing non-church goers of the graces of being a Christian. It is an immense privilege for our parish to receive this TASK FORCE OF FAITH to help evangelise our parish.

We need your help:

  1. All the missionaries need bed and breakfast accommodation for the week. Can you provide accommodation for one or two of our missionaries team.

  2. The Team will have their lunch and supper in the Shore Gallery. Amelia will be asking different groups in the parish to volunteer to help host these needs.

  3. The group will begin each day with Mass. Please try to come to the daily Mass between 20-27 August to pray for this mission.

  4. Please start to pray now for the success of the Mission. The Mission will help many of the lapsed and unchurched to engage with Jesus and the Sacraments. We pray for all our missionaries, as yet unknown to us, who have agreed to come to St Patrick’s.

ST JOSEPH’S HOME – COFFEE MORNING  – BRING & BUY

There is a Coffee Morning & Bring & Buy Sale on Saturday 6th August from 11.15am at St Joseph’s Home, Cotham Hill, Bristol BS6 6JT.  There are refreshments and Irish Coffee available.  Please do your best to support the Sisters and staff of this Catholic care home that has supported a lot of our own parishioners over the years.  Your generosity is much appreciated.

“The 12th Annual GK Chesterton Pilgrimage will take place this year on the hundredth anniversary of GKC being received into the Catholic Church, Saturday 30th July.
